MLKCC SPECIAL RECOGNITION / DRUM MAJOR PRESS RELEASE The 2008-Drum Major award was presented
during the annual MLK Banquet on Saturday, January 19 ,2008 at the
Lake Jackson Civic Center. This award is presented each year to
residents who have demonstrated sacrificial service and leadership in
achieving human dignity, racial equality, and racial harmony in
Brazoria County. Mrs. Evelyn Moore - Mrs. Moore is the
Chief Executive Officer of the
Brazoria County
Head Start Program. She has touched the lives both directly and
indirectly of many children in our county . When she started working for
Head Start in 1975, there was one center and 44 children and now under her
leadership the program has grown to 8 centers and 492 children in 8 cities
located in
Brazoria County. She has been responsible for millions of dollars
being designated to our county in the form of grants over the past 15 years.
Because of her efforts there is now a Early Head Start Program in
Brazoria County . Her devotion and commitment to children can be seen
in every aspect of the
Head Start Program. She has devoted 31 years of her life to the
Head Start Program and continues to be a voice for the children of
Brazoria County . In 2003 Evelyn was elected to the National Head Start Association Board of Directors for a 2 year term. In 2004 Evelyn was named Citizen of the Year by the Brazosport Facts for her tireless work in and around Brazoria County . In 2004 she participated in the People to People Ambassador program in which she traveled to South Africa to share ideals on child care. Locally she serves on the following Boards :
Brazosport College Early Childhood Advisory Board, Chamber of Commerce ,
Hospital Advisory Board , Women Building Communities , and Community
Foundation of
Brazoria County. Evelyn and her husband Nate are natives of Brazoria County and have two children, Natalie of Austin, Texas and Nathan who resides in Waco. Evelyn is the daughter of L.C. and Lillie Wright of Brazoria. The MLKCC members are excited and happy to present this prestigious award to Mrs. Evelyn Moore. Congratulations Mrs. Moore. The 2nd Awardee is : Dr. Renard L. Thomas : Assistant Professor of Environmental Toxicology at Texas Southern University -Houston . Dr. Thomas joined the Angleton ISD School Board in 1988 and has served as Secretary, Vice President and President. He was appointed to the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) in March 1996 and currently serves as President. He has served on several committees of the TASB and held offices on these committees. The current committees that he serves on the TASB includes the Member Services Committee, Planning and Development Committee, Budget/ Finance Committee, Legislative Committee, and Mentorship Special Committee. Dr. Thomas has conducted research in the field of Toxicology and is well published. He was an Environment Protection Agency Fellow in 1997, a Texas Sea Grant Fellow and holds a US Patent. Mr. Thomas is an active member of the First Missionary Baptist Church in Angleton where he serves as a Deacon, Trustee, and Sunday School Teacher. Renard and his wife, Renita have two sons Valor and Royal. The MLKCC members are very proud to award the Drum Major award to Dr. Renard L. Thomas. Congratulations Dr. Thomas.
